Detailed information about Australia

AUSTRALIA

Australia is the world’s sixth largest country in terms of surface area. Contrary to what everyone knows, the capital is Canberra. Australia, with an approximate population of about 25 million, is an island country and has no land border with any other country. Settlements are mostly in coastal areas.  Since it is located in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are exactly the opposite of our country. In other words, while we are in winter, Australia is in summer.

ECONOMY

Australia is an economically prosperous country. The most important fact that makes the country unique is that prosperity is equally accessible to everyone as much as possible.   The country’s biggest source of income is rich mineral resources of Australia. There are many valuable metals such as uranium, gold, oil and coal. These are the main sources of prosperity of the country.  The countries that are Australia’s largest trading partners can be listed as China, India, Japan and other Asian countries. It is one of the least affected countries in the world, especially in times of crisis.

Other important sources of income can be listed as education and tourism. Australia generates an annual revenue of approximately 100 AUD billion, particularly from the education sector. This income status proves how much Australia pays attention to the education sector. Especially, students coming from abroad for university and language education have a serious employment opportunity for the country.

Its natural beauties and unique beaches have made Australia a center of attraction in terms of tourism. Every year millions of people from different parts of the world travel to Australia to see these natural beauties.

Currency is Australian dollar. 1 AUD is approximately 0.73 USD.

CLIMATE
In general, we can say that the climate of Australia is temperate subtropical. The annual temperature differences are not too high. However, it should not be forgotten that the climate will vary depending on where you live. For example, in Melbourne, since the weather can change more than once in a day, it is useful to be prepared for this situation. J  You may experience both rainy and warm weather in the same day.   Brisbane has a fully subtropical climate. Even if it is winter, do not be surprised if you see a temperature of around 28-30 degrees on sunny days. Another interesting thing is that it doesn’t snow in Australia at all. The vast majority of Australians have almost never seen snow in their lives. The first choice of those who want to gain this experience is the snowy regions of New Zealand. Another interesting detail is the rainfall in Australia. From time to time, flooding can be observed in certain places. The weather in winter is similar to the season in November in our country.

GOVERNMENT

Australia is governed by the same state system as in America, that is, it has a federative form of government. Each state has a capital city and a prime minister. All states are subordinate to the Federal government located in Canbera. Certain living rules may vary by state. To mention the states and their capitals in Australia.

SECURITY

Australia is one of the safest countries in the world. The state pays utmost attention to maintain this safe environment. Even if you are out late at night, you feel safe. The security of the country is provided by the police. However, you need to take into account the minimum caution requirements in all parts of the world. Although there are very few, Australia also has slightly less dangerous neighborhoods. But in general, we can easily reach the assumption that Australia is much safer than many cities in the world.

ACCOMMODATION

Many of our students always have the following questions in their minds: “Where will I stay in the city where I go ? , How will it be ? , Is my host family safe ?” The families selected for accommodation are those that are accredited by the country’s ministry of education and have been carefully selected by a school and have certain conditions. Therefore, you do not need to worry about the safety of the host families. Since the host families have been doing this job professionally for many years, they attach importance to student satisfaction and sensitivity. Our students expectations will be met at a high rate since we inform the school about the situations that are important to our students during their stay (not wanting a  host family with children, not having a pet, etc.) before they go.

Our students generally prefer homestay accommodation for the first 4 weeks. It is a great opportunity to meet Australian families and get used to the culture and life of the country where they will be staying for a long time. In the homestay option, the family offers breakfast and dinner to the student. After the end of their accommodation, our students can arrange a room in shared houses. Average room rates will be between 150-250 AUD per week. The distance to the school is between 15-55 minutes. There is a minimum age limit of 16 years.

Dormitory

Dormitory is another accommodation option. Staying in a dormitory can be in a single or a double room. There is usually a bathroom and toilet in the room. Unlike homestay, meals are not included in dormitory accommodation. Students can cook their own meals in the dormitory kitchen. In the dormitory room, the student can share the room with someone else or stay alone. Average dormitory prices are 250-360 AUD per week. It varies according to the location of the dormitory, the student’s choice of stay and the length of stay.

WORKING IN AUSTRALIA

The reason why our students mostly prefer Australia is that they have the right to work at the same time as they study. Students can work a total of 40 hours in two weeks. There is no time limit during the holidays. Students can arrange their own 40 hours of work in two weeks. For example; They can work 30 hours one week and 10 hours the next. This is your legal limit.

Some students work longer hours in jobs that they receive money from hand. They work more hours in Turkish restaurants, kebab shops and various food industries.

As for the most curious question of all our students, “How much can I earn? “

Before answering the question, let’s talk a little about the working system in Australia. You’ll get paid weekly when you start working. Some businesses may also give your salary every 2 weeks, but in general, the vast majority give a weekly wage. This is actually due to the fact that you pay your living expenses weekly. Since you pay your rent weekly, not monthly, you also receive your salary weekly.

One of the most important things you should do when you go to Australia is to get a tax number. The places where you work legally will deposit your salary into your bank account. Your hourly rate will be around 19 AUD minimum, although there are slight variations by state. This hourly rate will vary depending on your job, education and, of course, your language level. In some jobs, you may be able to earn much. Here are a few different examples of the situation:

Waiter : 17 – 25 AUD
Barista : 20 – 28 AUD
Housekeeping : 24 – 32 AUD
Software : 45 – 85 AUD
Uber Eats : 18 – 35 AUD
Musician : 50-75 AUD

In addition, overtime wages are about 1.5 times your hourly wages. If you work on public holidays you will get overtime payment again.

WORK AND JOB OPPORTUNITIES

It should not be forgotten that the jobs to be found in the first place will be in the service sector. Almost 95% of students who come to Australia are working. Since education is the second largest source of income in Australia, there is a very serious student circulation. As well as incoming students, there are students who have completed their education and returned to their country. Since education is a very serious source of employment for Australia, there is a serious student-created economy in the country. Therefore, we can say that do not be afraid of not finding a job. Trust only yourself and the country you are going to J . There are job opportunities in many different business areas. When your boss pay cash-in-hand, the start of the wages you will receive can be minimum 12 -13 AUD. Of course, these fees will increase in the future with your experience.

The first important thing to do after opening a bank account will be to get a TFN (Tax File Number). A professional CV should be prepared after the TFN is received. In this regard, schools can help their students prepare a CV.

One of the important things to do after arriving in Australia is to get an RSA (responsible service of alcohol) certificate and a Barista certificate. Having RSA certification will open the door to work in great restaurants and cafes in Brisbane. The RSA certificate can also be obtained online. The fee for an RSA certificate ranges from AUD 60 to AUD 180.

Some of our language schools also offer this course.

In addition, you can also benefit from online application sites in Australia to find a job. The most used job search sites in Australia can be listed as follows.

https://jobsearch.gov.au/

https://www.adzuna.com.au/

Another job search method is that after the CV is prepared, it can be given to places in the service sector (cafes, restaurants, takeaway places). Places in the service sector often train the person they will hire. After the training period is over, they make a job offer. Some places pay a fee in the training part, some places pay a fee after hiring. If you get an offer to train, try to learn and be flexible about the job rather than being paid. Imagine that the employer may not want to both teach you the job and pay you. In this regard, you need to be a little more self-sacrificing, at least at first.

Important Note: You provide the fastest job finding opportunity with a good network. Therefore, being socially active will help you tremendously both in learning English and in finding a good job. Have friends of all nationalities.

You can legally work 40 hours in two weeks. This means that you can work 30 hours a week, 10 hours the next week, or 20 hours a week. There is no time limit when your school is on vacation or during break periods. In addition, students have the opportunity to work more where they are paid by hand. However we suggest you; considering that your main goal is to learn a language, at least you do not work too hard until your language level reaches a good point. You should always take into account that if your school absenteeism level falls below 85%, it poses serious risks in terms of canceling your visa.

LANGUAGE SCHOOLS

Australia has become one of the most popular destinations for language education, especially for Turkish and foreign students in the last 10 years. Of course, it has been another positive factor to have legal work permits, as well as appropriate living and education costs. Australia is a welfare country so when evaluated in terms of education, this situation has brought quality in the field of education. Language education is above world standards. Many students come from different countries that’s why you can hear different accents. In real life, you will not only talk to people who are native speakers. It will be your advantage to become familiar with the accents of people who are learning the language as a second language.

Students can attend day or evening classes. It gives you flexibility according to the working hours of your job. On average, you receive 20-24 hours of language training per week. However, students can take intensive courses. These intensive courses are usually 30-36 hours per week

One of the most frequently asked questions is; “What level should I start at?’’ or, ‘’How will my level be determined?” Let’s take a look at how the process works. On the first day you attend language school, you will take a placement test. In this case, schools will also subject you to an in the first day. In this orientation, you will be given detailed information about education and the city. After your level is determined in the placement test, you will be placed in a suitable class.

One of the situations that students are most dissatisfied with is that they cannot start from the level in their own country. For example, the student’s level is Intermadiate, and this student can be at elementary or pre-intermadiate level as a result of the placement test. During the exam, your level is determined by taking into account your speaking, writing, grammar and vocabulary.  Nevertheless do not let it demotivate you.  If you start training with your real level and also your performance is good, you will have the opportunity to move to the next level earlier, since your teachers are already observing you. You can think of it as an average of 6-8 weeks for each level. English language schools offer you other English course opportunities besides General English. For example, business English, such as IELTS, EAP, Cambridge, TOFEL. You need to be at certain levels for these courses.

CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

After language education in Australia, students usually prefer to extend their visas and study in a professional field. In general, these certificate programs are in the field of “Business”. Below you can find information about these programs. By the way, after the language school, you can choose the following programs multiple times. Besides, you have the chance to extend your visa for up to 5 years with a single application. Mostly, the reason why students want to participate in these certificate programs is that they have the opportunity to study 2 days a week and spend the remaining 5 days as they wish. The fees of the certificate courses are more appropriate for language education. You must have sufficient language level to participate in the programs.

HEALTH AND HOSPITALS

As you know, before applying for a visa, your health insurance is taken out by the school. Generally, schools prefer companies such as BUPA and Allianz. On the first day you go to school for orientation, they will give you an envelope from the insurance company in your name. In the envelope, they explain what your insurance covers and under what conditions you can benefit from the hospitals.

During your stay in Australia, you can be examined in hospitals with this card and passport (except for dental treatment, aesthetics and eye examination). It should not be forgotten that the waiting time in hospitals is long and the health system is relatively weak compared to Turkey. If there is an emergency, you can go to the hospital immediately and you will be subject to normal emergency conditions. Under normal circumstances, if you have a cold and minor injuries, you can also get treatment from a private doctor and you can reach a private doctor almost anywhere in the city, and there is also a small health center in every shopping center. If you are examined in such health institutions (80 AUD), you can get half of your money back by filling out a form (claim report) with your insurance company.

If you have an opportunity to get private health insurance, you can have the chance to benefit from private hospitals free of charge and without waiting. Annual fees start from 2500 AUD.

+ 18 PLUS CARD

Another important thing to do after arriving in Australia is to get a +18 card. In addition to providing you with extra points for some government transactions, receiving the card will be an official document that you can use in Australia instead of your passport. You can ask questions about the card application to your school’s consultation.

CULTURE, LIFE AND ENGLISH

Australia has always been one of the most livable places in the world. It is a country and also a continent where the population density is the lowest according to its area and social welfare and peace are provided under high conditions. In time you will get used to and adapt the culture. Observe your surroundings and people for the first time. People will attach great importance to each other. They stand in line at the bank or bus station.  Remember that you will stay for a long time in a place where you are unfamiliar with language and culture, and the sooner you adapt to where you live, the better you will learn the language and culture. You have to be respectful to people. Don’t be surprised when people greet you on the bus or while walking on the road even if you don’t know them J . At the bank, convenience store, gas station, and almost everywhere, people greet each other and ask about their day. You have to get used to it. In general, people love to chat and use allusions (in a positive way). Don’t be afraid to talk because of your English level. As people know that you came here to learn a language and they will try to understand you. If you encounter a police while driving or anywhere, try to help him. If you are in a difficult situation, the police will help you in every way possible. Remember, in this country, the police has also responsibility of prosecuting. One of the things you should never do is never drive under the influence of alcohol. The sanctions will be very severe and you will find yourself in court as a result J.

LANGUAGE

Australian Accent is much closer to the Irish and English accent. Australians prefer to use some words abbreviated when using English. As your level progresses over time, make sure that you learn the abbreviations (slang language), it will make you feel better. If you have no idea how, let’s try to explain it with a few examples below. J

Thank you > ta                   today afternoon > sarvo                      football> footy

Afternoon > arvo              biscuit>biccy                                          laptop>lappy

In addition, you can buy stationery needs and technology products in stores such as JB HI-FI OFFICEWORKS, DICK SMITH, HARVEY NORMAN and TARGET. In general, the prices of electronic products in Australia are very affordable compared to our country.
